Grasmere Nursery Goes ‘Quackers’ on Polling Day!!

As the country was gripped by Election Fever on Thursday 7th May, the children at Grasmere Nursery School held their own elections – voting for the names of the three new Magpie Call Ducks that are living in their orchard!

Each of the three classes held their own election – where all of the children’s name suggestions were recorded. Children were then able to vote for their name of choice for their class duck by placing a token in the appropriate ballot box.

Yellow and Green class chose the names for the two female ducks – Yellow’s duck is now called ‘Poppy’ and Green class named theirs ‘Daisy’. Blue class have named their male duck ‘Danny’.

“The children loved the whole experience!” said Forest School Practitioner Karen Copas “They talked about their parents going to vote in the General Election, and felt very excited that they were having their own election. It gave the naming of the ducks much more relevance for them too.”

Joy Luxford, Headteacher added: “The children had a fabulous day, and the elections encompassed so many learning opportunities for them. It also enabled us to promote the important British Value of ‘Democracy’ in a very meaningful way for our young children.”
